Frequently Asked Questions
1. " Why do you have rules? I don't like rules".

Nobody likes rules (especially a
non-conformist!); We like to refer to them as
guidelines in order to assist us in obtaining a
harmonious, respectful environment.  These
guidelines have been set in place as we gain
experience in communal/sustainable living.

Sustainable living/Tribal living is very, very
different than fast-food, 9 to 5, city dwelling.  Take
a look at the most successful intentional
communities and you will find they all have one
thing in common "Bylaws".

2.  "Why can't I have my own dwelling?  I don't
like sharing".

Well then, communal living is probably not for
you, and you should look into co-housing.

Everyone needs space from time-to-time, and
yes this can be achieved.

For conservation purposes,  "doubling up" is
practiced during cold winter months.

3.
"Can I grow whatever I want?  I have my own
seed!"

a.
Basically, yes you can, so    long as it is not
another variety of produce the farm already grows
(cross pollination can result in loss income for
the farm when a pure strain has been
compromised)
b. So long as your seed has been GMO tested,
again not a problem.  This land was pristine
when the founders laid down the cash to
purchase it.  The location was chosen with for
that reason.
c. As long as your seed is drought-tolerant and
short season it will grow here very successfully.

4.  "Why do I have to pay? You should be paying
me!
"

The current going rate for communal "buy-in"
averages out to $5000.  This is a fee charged by
the most successfully run intentional
communities in our country.  It is mainly to
"weed-out" those individuals who are not serious
about true tribal living.

Because this is unrealistic for most individuals,
and therefore making the dream unattainable we
have thus far not requested buy-in's of our
permanent residents.

The most successful intentional communities,
also by and large require a flat 10% (or more)
income share to cover farm costs.  The Organic
Freedom Farm understands that the needs of
any two individuals are not always the same,
therefore we have tried to be flexible in this
regard.

Finally,  the skills you will learn here are
generally taught at "survival schools".  Survival
schools are BIG business, and will charge you
thousands of dollars to learn these skills.  We
find our "work-trade" program (when available) to
be more than fair.

5.  "How many hours a day do I have to work?"

Well, that depends on you and your fellow
communards!  The work is done when it is done.
